What it is

MNRF is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure with a dual action. It combines the gentle mechanical injury caused by superfine microneedles with the heat delivered by radiofrequency. Together these lead to collagen remodelling in the dermis — the deeper layer of the skin — and so to improvement.

What it treats

MNRF is used for moderate to severe acne scars, open pores, stretch marks, fine lines, wrinkles and facial rejuvenation. It is also used in the treatment of surgical, traumatic and chickenpox scars.

What to expect

A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to numb the area to be treated, and takes about 45 minutes to an hour to act. The treatment area is then cleansed and the procedure performed. There may be pinpoint bleeding during the procedure, which soon settles. How long the procedure takes depends on the size of the area being treated.

Afterwards

There will be redness, slight swelling and mild burning or pain for two to three days. Apply moisturisers liberally three times daily. Sun protection for a week is important, including the use of sunscreens. Avoid cosmetics and all other medical creams for five days, or as your doctor advises. If you have the procedure on a Friday, you can go back to work on Monday.

How many sessions

You will generally need four to six treatments at an interval of four to six weeks. MNRF may improve some acne scars. The number of sessions, the downtime and the result vary from person to person.
